![]() Besides, no beauty is immune to the ravages of time. The peer pressure to conform to these standards, especially on young girls, can be crippling in real life. ![]() The crux is that these standards are unrealistic and there will never be a natural beauty good enough. While the audience may applaud natural beauties, even the traditionally beautiful undergo a few corrections here and there. It is a widely known notion that in Kpop, plastic surgery is rampant. These standards drove Lilico to undergo a full body plastic surgery, even when it came with lethal side effects and an expiry tag. That is what the movie is all about at its core. In recent incidents, Chinese pop star Kris Wu and Korean actor Ji Soo have tumbled down hard from their mountains of fame due to their sex and bullying scandal respectively, without the final verdict being out. In Lilico’s case, the reaction is as drastic as was her transformation. It doesn’t matter anymore if she currently looks beautiful or if she’s talented. The once beloved idol becomes a target of mockery when the truth to her beauty is revealed. For Lilico, the scandal is her full body plastic surgery. In this new generation, especially Asian industry, image is everything for a celebrity. The film also portrays the cancel culture of the generation. Lilico’s boyfriend ditches her to marry a society girl, saying his status won’t allow him him to marry someone like her. Her status is further threatened, when she realizes that though she worked hard and went through physical pain to elevate her social and financial status, it is not enough for her high-flying boyfriend. In Helter Skelter, Lilico’s spotlight and career is threatened when her agency brings in a new, youthful and a natural beauty. The shelf life of idols’ careers is quite small. No matter how famous or talented an idol is today, they can be easily replaced. We know that everyday there’s a new idol who’s being sold to the audience. I’m personally a fan of Korean dramas and Korean pop. What makes the movie interesting is its take on the beloved pop culture of our generation. But she still upholds beauty as the only way to get to the top, even though she’s not exactly living the happiest life. ![]() But there isn’t much that is revealed, except for the fact that she was not born beautiful. We do get a glimpse into Lilico’s personality when she speaks to her little sister. When a celebrity falls from grace, we see the juicy headlines, the villian-in-making, but we don’t see the celebrity as a person through their journey. But I feel that the movie focuses more on portraying the story through the limited lens of an audience, which would be the case in reality, rather than through the lens of the celebrity’s life itself. Other film reviews critiqued the storyline for not fleshing out Lilico’s character from before her glamourous life. Helter Skelter doesn’t offer much on Lilico’s character in-depth explaining why she chose the industry or where she came from. For Lilico, her pretty face is all that has got her to where she is. It is somewhat satisfying to see that pop idols or popstars, do not have perfect lives either that a pretty face will not make lives any easier. The movie sells the experience of how exactly Lilico falls. It establishes the characters quickly and the ending is a no-brainer. She’s at the top of her game, when she falls not-so-gracefully. Helter Skelter tells the story about a Japanese idol Lilico or Ririko, who is revered for her pretty face. Something inside of me is going to end very soon. Lilico – The pleasure of watching someone fail So, here are my thoughts about the movie. Some descriptions of the movie said that the story is told with exaggerated themes to take home the point, but I personally believe that the storyline is as realistic as it can get. It depicts the perils of obsession with beauty in our society and in the entertainment world. Japanese film Helter Skelter is adapted from a manga of the same name. At the same time, it will also make you reflect on yourself and the pop culture built around you. I found it while trying to describe the feeling). Watching the movie gives you the feeling of schadenfreude (feel free to google the meaning of the word. Do you have an appetite for a good psychological thriller? Because I’ve got one that will visually awe you, and keep you hooked to the storyline.
